I want to start a website, what do I need before approaching a web design company?
If you don't currently have a website the first thing you will need is a domain name and a hosting plan. Most hosting companies will have the option to buy both, so the domain name, which is the address of your website and the hosting, which is space to store the website online. We recommend when you choose a hosting plan you choose one, which supports a server-side language such as asp.net, classic asp or php for future development.
If your looking to run a e-commerce shop or have a content management system in place then the hosting company will not only need to support a server-side language but have the facilities to run databases as well such as mysql or sql server.
Once you have setup your hosting and purchased your domain name you are then ready to work on the website itself.
The first thing you will need to do is work out, which pages you would like to have on your website for example about us, products, services, testimonials, news, contact us etc. Once you have a list of all the pages, the next step will be to start working on content for each page.
If you are interested in getting your website ranked in search engines then the quality of the content is a big factor.
Example:
If your company offers plumbing services in Cambridge, then your chosen keyword would be something like 'Plumbers in Cambridge'.
You would then need to deliver content, which was unique (not used anywhere else online), keyword rich (using the words Plumbers and Cambridge throughout the content) along with the content being well structured (not over using the words Plumbers and Cambridge to the point where content is not well formed).
If you decide to use a web design company to design and build your website, then it is best to supply content in a word document along with a list of all pages.
